Author: TheTravelMan

Are planning on Backpacking Southeast Asia?  Are you considering backpacking Laos?  If so, here are some route ideas for your backpacking itinerary.

Most backpackers that travel Laos, start by entering at Huay Xai, just across the border of Northern Thailand.  From Huay Xai, take the two day journey on the slow boat to Luang Prabang, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng.  Spend a few days in Laung Prabang, visiting sights such as the Royal Palace Museum or taking a day trip to the Pak Ou Caves.  From Luang Prabang, catch the bus to Vang  Vieng, where most backpackers go for the numerous outdoor activities in the area.  Next, catch the bus to the capital of Laos, Vientiane.  Spend some time visiting Wat Si Saket , Xeing Khuan, or the Lao National Museum.

If you plan on heading back to Thailand to finish your backpacking adventure, catch the bus across the border to Nong Khai.  If you want to see more of Laos, take the long bus ride to Pakse.  While in Pakse, check out Wat Luang and Wat Tham Fai.  After a few days in Pakse, catch the bus down to Hat Xai Khun, before taking the boat to spend a few days in Don Khon and Don Khong (also known as the Si Phan Don region).   While in the Si Phan Don region, spend time seeing the Khon Phapheng and Somphamit waterfalls.  Also try to catch a glimpse of the Irrawaddy Dolphins.  Finish off your stay with some tubing, kayaking, or rafting.  Finally, end your trip by taking a bus into Northern Cambodia.

Both of these trips can easily be done in the reverse direction.
